How the Rat Wrangler start works: cage setup, feeding, breeding, genes, disease control and the math that decides whether rats are profitable.

Probably Stolen Rat Guide: Ranching, Genes and Meat
Put a cage and a feed dispenser in the same room, stock the feeder with food, and keep the cage clean. A standard rat eats about 65 calories per day; heavier rats yield more meat. The run is profitable only if the meat and breeding value exceed the feed cost, so check your feed price before you scale. The Rat Wrangler start gives you a cage, a feeder, three pairs and a cleaver.
Rat ranching is the game's most literal production chain: feed goes in, rats grow, meat comes out. It is also the start with the most hidden maintenance. A clean, well-fed colony is a renewable product. A dirty, overcrowded colony is a disease outbreak with a rent bill.
The Rat Wrangler start
600 credits, 200 rent, cage, feeder, three pairs of rats, cleaver.
This is the highest starting cash in the game and the only start with a living inventory. The 600 credits are not a bonus for nothing: the colony consumes food and attention from day one. If you ignore it for a week, you will come back to a cage full of disease and dead animals.
The start also unlocks the We Have Rats! achievement, which was the playtest's hidden scenario. The best specialization guide ranks it as the strongest opening balance.
Cage setup
The basic layout is:
- Cage on the floor.
- Feed dispenser attached to the right side.
- Food in the dispenser.
- Vacuum robot or cleaner equipment inside, if you have one.
- Space around the cage for you to interact with it.
Only cage equipment can go inside the cage. Do not try to put a normal shelf or a display case in it. The feed dispenser must be attached; a pile of food on the floor is not a feeder.
Press start on the feeder to stockpile food. The rats eat from the stockpile. If the stockpile is empty, they go hungry, growth slows and the colony starts losing condition.
Feeding and growth
A standard rat eats 65 calories per day. The exact calorie value of each food is shown in its item details. The cheapest calories are usually scraps, pet food or surplus crops; the most expensive are prepared meals.
Growth rules, as reported by players and visible in the info panel:
- A rat gains weight when it has enough food.
- Growth slows by up to 50% when hunger is below 400.
- Growth halves when the rat is starving.
- Growth stops after 14 days unless the rat has the Longevity gene.
- A rat never drops below 25% of its stage target weight.
- A rat that gains 30g or more overnight leaves feces.
The last rule is the one that catches new ranchers. A well-fed colony produces more waste, and waste is the disease vector. Feeding and cleaning are the same job.
Breeding
Rats breed when they are healthy, fed and not overcrowded. The colony starts with three pairs, which is enough to produce a first litter without buying more animals. Do not add rats until you have measured the feed cost of the existing colony.
Breeding is not free. A pregnant rat eats more, a litter adds mouths, and the cage's durability wears faster as the living mass increases. The cage has a maximum durability; an ingot-size upgrade adds +20 max durability, and scrap repairs restore 50% of the missing durability.
If you want a stable colony, cull or sell before the cage reaches its overcrowding thresholds. The thresholds are 55%, 70% and 90% of capacity. At 55% the rats are crowded; at 70% they are stressed; at 90% the colony is in crisis.
Disease and overcrowding
Disease risk rises when feces and dead animals cover about one quarter of the cage. The exact cleanup routine matters more than the medicine.
- Clean the cage daily. Use the vacuum robot or the cleaner equipment.
- Remove dead rats immediately. A corpse is a disease source, not inventory.
- Do not overfeed. More food means more waste; feed to the target weight, not the maximum.
- Keep the colony below 55% capacity. The 70% and 90% thresholds are emergencies, not targets.
- Watch Immunity. Below 50 Immunity, a rat has a 5–25% chance per night of getting sick.
- Treat sick rats early. A diseased rat loses 25% of max health per night and recovers with a chance equal to its Immunity.
A diseased rat is not automatically doomed. Isolate it, treat it, and do not let it breed. If the disease spreads, cull the affected animals before the whole cage is contaminated.
Genes and the Gene Scanner
The Gene Scanner reveals alleles. The important ones for a meat colony are:
- Hunger Rate. Low is green (eats less); high is red (eats more).
- Growth Rate. High is better for meat.
- Immunity. High is better for disease resistance.
- Longevity. Extends the growth window past 14 days.
- Fertility. More litters, more mouths.
The scanner is sold by the Retired Rat Rancher, who visits on Fridays. The Inventor also stocks it once Rat Ranching is unlocked, as of 1.0.0.5. Scan before you breed: a fast-growing rat with a low hunger rate is worth more than a heavy rat that eats you out of profit.
The Retired Rat Rancher
The Friday visitor sells the rat infrastructure:
- Cage.
- Feed dispenser.
- Meat cleaver.
- Blue labeler.
- Cleaner robot.
- Wire cutters.
- Small Nutrifruit.
- Four random rats.
- Gene Scanner.
- Livestock steroid and immunity serums.
The random rats are a gamble. Do not buy them unless you have cage space and feed. The steroids and immunity serums are for a colony you intend to keep, not for a quick flip.
The profit math
Rat ranching is profitable when:
Meat value + breeding value > feed cost + cage wear + your time
Use your own prices:
- Feed cost per day = 65 calories × feed price per calorie × number of rats.
- Meat value per rat = sale price × yield (weight-dependent).
- Breeding value = sale price of a healthy rat × litters per cycle.
- Cage wear = repair scrap cost per durability point × wear per day.
A colony of 10 rats at 65 calories each consumes 650 calories per day. If feed is cheap and meat is expensive, the margin is real. If feed is expensive and meat is common, the colony is a hobby with a rent bill.
The exact meat prices in 1.0.0.6 need testing. The community's rat profit posts are based on earlier builds and should not be treated as current. Write down the price you actually get, not the price you remember.
Rat products and buyers
Rats produce:
- Meat, the main product.
- Feces, a waste product that can be composted or sold to the right buyer.
- Live rats, for breeding or for the rancher's own stock.
- Genes, via breeding, not a direct sale.
Normal customers do not buy live rats. The meat and the breeding stock are the products. If you are holding live rats for a buyer who never comes, you are paying feed for inventory that does not move.
A daily rat routine
- Check the feeder stockpile.
- Check the cage cleanliness.
- Remove dead rats and waste.
- Check weights and hunger.
- Scan any rat you intend to breed.
- Cull or sell before 55% capacity.
- Record feed cost and meat sales for the day.
The routine takes a few minutes once the colony is stable. The money guide explains how to fold the meat income into the wider cash plan.
Mods for rat ranching
- DangpuPlus (3828893950) adds a rat dashboard.
- Smart Inventory Arrange (3829206666) keeps the meat and feed stacks tidy.
- AutoStorage (3829304074) reduces manual sorting.
- Item Details (3828868413) shows the calories and condition of feed.
The QoL mods guide has install notes. Mods do not change the fundamental math: feed in, meat out, keep the cage clean.

A rat sighting notice. The cage is a production machine with a disease meter.
FAQ
How do rats make money?
Breed for weight, then sell meat and breeding stock. The Retired Rancher is the Friday buyer.
Why are my rats sick?
Feces, dead animals and overcrowding raise disease risk. Clean the cage and keep density under 55%.
Which genes should I breed for?
Low Hunger Rate and high Immunity. Use the Gene Scanner before breeding.
